There was drama at the recent WPCA monthly meeting which was also "gatecrashed" by the SACF President Mr Gotty Hansen. Two months ago Yorkshire addressed a letter to the SACF the subject being a vote of no confidence in the Province Chairman Hein Kroff , WPCA were sent a copy , to cut a long story short , Yorkshire requested a response to their correspondence and a vote was taken . All the clubs barring Yorkshire voted in favour of Hein Kroff staying on as Chairman . Another letter was read from Yorkshire requesting the WPCA to support their application to form the Boland Cycling Union . This will have to be dealt with at the SACF , no mention was made in the letter , of support from the other clubs - Paarl CC , Rhadsport CC and the two Worcester clubs - in that geographical area. Gotty Hansen and Bart Harmse of the SACF are on something of a roadshow and are visiting all the provincial associations , he didnt address the meeting but was able to confirm that plans are in the pipeline to give track cycling a bit more prominence.
Track Cycling
No rest for the wicked , action on the track commenced on the 31st August at the Velodrome , league dates for September are Tuesday 5th , 12th & 26th . there are days before and after league track racing where the track is available for training. Call Piet Odendal @ 083 300 0062.
Rhadsport will be holding the Paarl League at the Faure Street track on the following dates:
First period : 7th & 21st October , 4th & 18th November and 9th December - 14hr00pm start.
Second period : 6th & 20th January , 03rd & 17th February and 3rd March - 14hrs00pm start.
The league will be split into two periods as the age groups will be affected after December 2000 , prize money will be paid at the end of the year . The second half of the league will commence in January 2001.
At a gathering of club delegates earlier in the month it was decided to put more effort into track cycling this year and the following was proposed and accepted : Each club would donate R500 in order to fund track meetings where the top riders in the country would compete against each other. It was proposed that WP , SA Invitation , Rest of SA and a WP Junior team take on each other in a series of events every .. six weeks. It is hoped that with having the "best" competing against each other , in spectator pleasing racing , the media would show interest and in turn re-invigorate the sport. The first one of these meetings will take place in October (this year). The Bellville league will be used to gauge whos who in the zoo when choosing the various Western Province teams. Whats important from the clubs point of view is that we have to cough up R500 everytime these events take place , in order to recoup some of this money WPCA are going to give us tickets to sell (face value R20) to you for R10.
Track International
On the days preceding the Burger/Sanlam , Tygerberg Cycling club will host this event .
Teams from South Africa , France , Belgium , Switzerland , Denmark , Germany and Holland will be competing at the Velodrome in the evening. On the Saturday from 1400pm - 1600pm the locals will be in action in the various age categories as a curtain raiser to the evenings entertainment.
Track Tests
Mr Gotty Hansen also let it be known that later on in the season there will be eight track tests between fifteen competing countries , five of these tests will take place in Pretoria and the final three at the velodrome , he mentioned that something like R150 000 in prize money will be at stake.
Track Training
There are training sessions for beginners/development and the more experienced riders when the track is available . Piet Odendaal will be running the sessions give him a call regarding the availability of the track. There are track bikes available.
Help!!!
The Development committee of the Province are appealing to club members who have any old spares , frames , wheels , helmets , shoes , tyres , anything even old jerseys , to donate to them. The equipment will be used to equip youngsters who want to upgrade from "toys" to proper road/track bikes. Once they have outgrown them they will be passed on to the next "generation". So far the committee have a few bikes available but most of them are incomplete , any spares will be put to good use.
Bellville Velodrome is going to be developed as a cycling centre by the UCI and they have donated 16 Schauf track bikes in that regard , someone will be appointed to run the centre and control the use of the bikes. The WPCA Development committee dont want to restricted by the UCI representative regarding the use of the Schauf bikes and this is why they are endeavoring to build up their own stock of bikes.
Double Century
Members that are interested in putting their posteriors through a few hours of saddle time can join up together as we are in the process of putting a few teams together for this event . Most members canvassed so far are in favour of doing it at a reasonable speed , but definitely not a 12 hour dawdle. Training rides start on the 10th September and again on the 25th September . At the October club meeting all interested parties must attend to work out the logistics and future training dates. Give Gerard Genis a call on 930 5978 or 0825757970 for more info.
