City Cycling Club Newsletter :  May 1999

Wiiliam Newman, Jason Peisl , John and Janet Moss have been selected to represent South Africa at the World Vets and Women’s Champs later in this year . well done to all of you and on behalf of the club we wish you all the luck in you endeavors to win GOLD .Apparently this will be the last time that they will be held at the Manchester Velodrome.

Something which may be of interest to our prospective world champs , from June there will be a track league, the dates are the 9th , 17th and 30th starting at 1900hrs at the Bellville Velodrome . So as an alternative to riding in the dark or on the indoor trainer trying in vain to keep some sort of fitness level , you can ride your ballbearings off in the relative safety of the "Drome". For more info contact Piet Odendaal .

The SACF are endeavoring to entice the UCI to hold a World Cup Track meet at Bellville in the near future so hold thumbs for them.

The next SA Track champs are going to be held in Pretoria , but it was decided at the last SACF congress that all future nationals be held indoors at Bellville until the country has another indoor venue. competitors will be involved in a referendum (Yes/No) regarding this issue.

Still on the track!! Full results from the 1999 National are on our Website http://home.intekom.com/Newmax/citycycling/

Should any of our members have or know of any track bikes collecting dust , (no matter what the age) please let us know , the Development Committe want to create a pool of bike for school kids to use at training clinics.

Chris Willemse has already booked the "Drome" for 13/15/17 March 2000 , What has he got planned ?

Development Committee WPCA

At a meeting recently held in Bellville , Khayoum Matthews of Elfin was elected Chairman , Gilbert Arendse of Yorkshire is the Vice Chair with Guy Brown of the Schools Academy , the general dogsbody. I think with Matthews in charge , the development of cycle racing as opposed to funriding will be given a well intentioned kick up the backside . We wish him and his committee all the best in his dealings with the SACF . Should any of our members have old or spare cycling kit please get in touch with the club as we can channel it on to the right people.

SA CHAMPS (Vets and Women)

Are you going to compete in the champs?

Do you want to share costs ?

Should we try and arrange it so that we travel as a club? LETS ORGANIZE SOMETHING.

Road Racing

1999/2000 Road racing season got underway on the Workers Day , 1st May when Ocean Wheelers hosted the racing at the Bottelary Cellar. A good turnout of racers in all categories enjoyed the fine weather and almost windless conditions . In the Seniors Mouldex dominated the placings with Rudolph Wentzel romping home well clear of the bunch which were almost a min down . For the record J vd Berg was second and Mark Wilcox third . A large field of Vets raced over 84k , with about 20k’s left there was a break of about 15 riders , Charl Marais attacked with Gerald Jephtas and they stayed away until the last k when attacks from the bunch led to City’s Gerard Genis winning the sprint from Carinus Lemmer and Charl. The Juniors race was won by Scott Atkinson with Wesley Cole and Grant Thomas 2nd and 3rd respectively , the womens race was won by Annelle Rabie with City’s Nicky Andrews placing fourth .

WPCA Monthly Meeting

Amongst other things discussed Piet Odendaal of Bellville and Trevor Hawtrey of the Officials Association were nominated for WP Honours , a vote was taken as only one person may be nominated per year and Hawtrey won by 10 votes to five , Trevor now needs to gain 75% of the votes at the AGM to be awarded honours. The Daniels Family(the parents to be more precise) were also discussed , it seems as if they are making the lives of the officials very unpleasant when following the races which Daniels junior is taking part in.No one wants to ban the child , as was suggested and the race organisers can’t ban the parents from driving behind the officials , as it infringes upon his constitutional rights. Cycling may still be considered a cinderella sport but it certainly has its moments. The WP SADF CC lasted less than a year as a member club of WPCA - I don’t think they even saw out their period of probation. The number of votes each club has in proportion to its licensed members were announced - we have two votes - most of the clubs have two votes but Peninsula’s delegate to Province squealed like a stuffed pig as they have no votes , Peninsula have quadrupled their membership by allowing sponsored teams to piggyback on their name , these new "members" were registered too late to be considered as part of the club’s licensed membership . Shame ! Its a tough world . The Province AGM takes place on the 21st of June at the Bellville CC Clubhouse , 8pm , visitors are welcome . Nominations for Chairman are Hein Kroff and Peter Wheeler

With winter exerting its grip on the Cape , here is a training schedule for indoors , that should prevent you from falling asleep on the bike!

In the next newsletter we’ll introduce you Russian Steps

New member , Angus Robinson is looking for training partners , Angus takes part in club rides on a Saturday , you can speak to him there or contact him on 73 3377 .

Gerard Genis will also be starting training rides from his new shop in Table View .

Have you noticed that the best times to ride over the weekend is about an hour before and an hour after the Stormers are playing at home. Half the maniacs on the road are either at the stadium or watching the game on the telly , it will be even better when the World cup cricket gets going , someone should organise a Chiefs /Pirates cup final at the same time.

Life member John Leahy has joined the Argus 21 club i.e. he has successfully completed 21 Argus tours . John’s time in the 1999 version was an excellent 3hrs08mins .

Grand Prix Points.

As memtioned in the last newsletter , racing will be conducted on a GrandPrix points system . Kindly note that only the first seven finishers will be awarded points . The proposal was made in September of 98 and accepted at the October meeting. This is the same system that is used at Killarney on Wednesday evenings, although the points allocation for the placings might differ. The Schools Academy are in charge of the system and there are teething problems!!!!!! Witness the events that took place after the first road race. The man from the Schools received the placings from the lines judges - numbers only - but couldn’t make out the names from the start sheet because the carbon copy was very faint , and then could’nt locate the various race refs to find out who abandoned . It should improve with time and if everyone co-operates . At the Province monthly meeting it was decided to amend the Grand Prix points allocation and only the first seven finishes will be allocated points as there are not enough Officials to go around to administer all the finishers (they should have thought about that before they put the proposal forward)

On the 9/10th of July 1999 there will be no formal racing as the Eric van Enter is to be held for the schoolkids in Kwazulu-Natal so we are going to arrange a CLUB race. We think this will be beneficial to all club members as the following weekend ( 17th July) Cape Flats are supposed to host the racing and by all accounts we don’t think a race will be held . All club members should be super fit by then , so no excuses , and all the pro’s are up country or overseas.

At the last ,well attended , (club) committee meeting (full committee bar one , who sent his apologies) we even had a visitor in John Simpson , we were again unable to gain access to our clubhouse so the meeting was held at a nearby pub/restaurant , we were told by the manager that we had to order drinks , as you can imagine cyclists aren’t the biggest of boozers but anyway a few beers and cokes later the meeting was held. We have been given notice that the City Council have plans to sell the stadium and revamp it into an Indoor sporting/exhibition complex (haven’t they learn’t their lesson with The Good Hope Centre) so we will be looking for alternative accommodation in the future.

New Club on the Block

Chris Willemse has started his own club - Tygerberg Cycling Club - And to join you will have to fork out R750 as an entrance fee. In return you will receive cycling kit to the value of R500 , and this includes a helmet and shoes ( I think) annual subs are R250 and you have to take your bike to his shop for service. Soon we will have 30 clubs in the province each with six members instead of six clubs with 30 members .

Elfin Cycling club were conspicuous by their abscence at the first road race of the season, they organised their own thing in the southern suburbs the same day. Their Members get fined if they are caught cycling without club jerseys , what will happen if members don’t attend their club events? Marshalling duty for the next ten years!!!

The Second race of the season was again hosted by Ocean Wheelers on 15th May in very windy conditions. All the categories were blown apart by attacks with only the strongest surviving. There were only four finishers in the Senior Elite race with SC Le Roux taking first Mark Wilcox second and Shaun Rhodes third.

The leading bunch in the Juniors were disqualified as they insisted on riding on the wrong side of the road leading up to the finish line. Don’t they realise that they run the risk of encountering oncoming traffic in the form of motor cars by riding in the right hand lane , all we need is some hard-arsed motorist to force the issue. No points were awarded even though there were other competitors still racing , we are led to believe that the officials had already withdrawn there services due to time constraints. And we wonder why the sport has such a high turnover in competitors.

The Vets was won by Gerard Genis , J du Plessis was second and A Bergh third.

In the womens race F Frick came first ,Alida De Goede was second and Wendy Watson was third . The womens racing seems to be picking up as there has been more than ten riders on both occasions

CHANGE OF DATES

WP T/T Champs will take place on the 18 September and Rhadsport will host the race on the 2nd October .

GRAND PRIX POINTS

The Points League will be updated after every race and will be displayed at the registration tables the following week.
