CITY CYCLING CLUB NEWSLETTER March/April 1999

The Rapport Tour ,Giro Del Capo(do we live in Italy?) the Vets and Women’s Tour and the Argus has been won and lost. On the Track ,our riders gained experience against foreign opposition. Development teams took part on the Road and Track ,and acquitted themselves very well considering the short time they had to prepare for these events, the difficult part of the development programme is to keep these riders busy , because I don’t think the SACF has anything else lined up for them until next year. The Track men and women strut their stuff at the SA Champs in April at Bellville and then its the turn of the Road Warriors to turn their legs over. There was a report in the newspaper the other day and some boffin at the Weather Office reckons that we are going to have a vey late winter this year. The experts always seem to get it wrong!!!!!!

REFHOLD/LOTUS VETS AND WOMENS 4 DAY
Well done to John Moss (19th) Peter Haupt(47th) and John Simpson(85th) who completed the tour ( we don’t know their positions in their age groups) ,over 60 riders failed to complete the 4 days .

SA TRACK CHAMPS 15 - 17TH APRIL

CITY members Willie Newman, John Moss , Grant Cotton ,Jason Peisl and Graham Ward competed at the SA’s held at the Bellville Velodrome. Janet Moss was incapacitated with the flu so she was unable to compete , we wish her a speedy recovery . The "foreigners raved about it being the first Nationals taking place under cover , they raved even more when it started raining and even more when the organisers produced buckets for the leaks , seriously though , the organising committee did themselves proud . A lso representing City were Steve Down who was on Line judge duty and John Leagh with the bike checks for the various age groups. The highlight for the club was John Moss winning gold in the 45+age cat. 15 km points race, John timed his attack perfectly and was able to win the points without mixing it with the sprinters , John came within a quarter of a lap winning the race on distance but was unable to lap the field before the start of the last sprint lap. Jason Peisl competing in the 30-39 age cat. won silver in the 3000 m pursuit with a time of 3m49,13s , in the 1000m with a time of 1m14,19s , in the 30km points race and bronze in the 1500m. Ian Hall of Central Gauteng won gold in everything other than the 1500m and sprint which was won by Wickus Esterhuizen of KNatal . Willie Newman won silver in the sprint, everyone in the velodrome other than a few line judges reckoned Willie won the 2nd ride to take gold , but it was not to be . In the 40-44age cat. it was the Kenny Jubber (EP) show , gold in all the disciplines . On the Friday uncle Harry Bairstow the 1930 sprint champ graced the arena with his presence.

1999 WPCA Road Season will commence on the 1st May with a race starting and finishing at the BOTTELARY WINE ESTATE thereafter on the weekend of 08 May the PPA will close down their fun ride season with the Club Mykonos 120k Super league and funride. The following weekend we will be back at BOTTELARY WINE ESTATE .On the 22 May the Schools Academy will host the racing and will start at the KLAPMUTS HOTEL.

The SA Road Champs will be held in North Gauteng 28th ,29th and 30th May for all categories up to Senior Elite excluding Veterans. We are busy getting a full road calender sorted out which will include distances , contact names etc etc for the May newsletter. Remember that the road season will be run on a Grand Prix basis where all finishers will be awarded points and the money will be dished out at the end of the season.

WHO IS GOING TO COMPETE IN THE ROAD CHAMPS??????

Annual General Meeting

Here is your committe for the 1999/2000 season:
Chairman : Steve Down
Vice Chairman : Graham Ward
Secretary/Treasurer : Mike Maartens
Road Captain : Charl Marais
Track Captain : Willie Newman
Additional Members : Angus Robinson ,: Oscar Ferreira,: Gerard Genis

At the meeting uncle Harry Bairstow recalled some of the club’s history , especially when he was track racing in the 1930’s.
It was also decided at the meeting to obtain a gazebo for the club , so that members can meet before and after race at a central spot , so keep a look out for it and come and enjoy a post race refreshment.
Chairman's Report
Here are some of the important issues that Steve mentioned in his report to club members . Membership has remained constant over the last few years , although new members are few and far between , so if you know of any riders that are keen on racing please encourage them to join our club. The highlight of the year was Janet Moss winning the sprint at the Masters World Track Championships . David George and James Perry being selected to ride at the Commonwealth Games , where David won bronze in the Time Trial with James being placed fifth, in the Road race. David ended fourth and James came close to winning a medal in the points race on the track. The City Council may be selling the Green Point Stadium ,so that means we will have to vacate our clubhouse , some sort of superdome entertainment centre will be built on the site , no concrete plans have been forthcoming so we can’t say when this will happen. The club has it’s own Web page on the internet. A big thank-you must go to Niel Buckland of Znugglez for the sponsorship of the club jerseys for the past two years. Znugglez are unable to renew the sponsorship for this year .The proposed merger of the SACF and PPA will have a big impact on cycling and cycling clubs. At the moment there is a lot of speculation of how the sport will be administered in the future, we will endeavour to keep you up to date on developments, the best thing to do is attend club meetings!!! Maybe we can get Lawrence Whitikar to address the members some time in the future .
